Owning and operating a nitro powered radio controlled car or truck adds an element of excitement and realism to this hobby above and beyond that provided by the electric RC counterparts. Unfortunately, it also poses some unique challenges. The one question that is posed to me the most often is ‘how do I start a nitro powered RC car’?

Well, first of all, you need to assemble a few necessary items. These can be obtained either individually, or purchased as a package with or without your radio controlled car or truck. You will need the correct nitro fuel, a glow igniter, batteries for your radio transmitter and receiver, and a small screwdriver.

Have your glow igniter fully charged and ready to use. Make sure you have installed batteries in your controller (transmitter) and the car’s on board receiver. Verify that they are functioning properly by operating the steering, throttle and brake. After all, you want to be able to control your RC car once it is running! Fill the car’s fuel tank with the proper nitro fuel. Be careful – fuel is extremely flammable and toxic! Check with your engine’s manufacturer or your local hobby shop to make sure you are using the recommended nitro mix. 20% is the most popular. OK? Now we are ready to fire her up.

Clip the glow igniter to the glow plug located in the top of the engine cylinder head. Rotate the engine by whatever means your car or truck uses such as manual pull recoil, on board electric starter, drill operated shaft starter, or portable starter box. You may have to ‘choke’ the engine to initially supply fuel to the carburetor. You can easily do this by placing a finger over the exhaust outlet. Watch for fuel movement through the fuel hose so you know when fuel has reached the carburetor. You don’t want to flood the engine!

Once the engine has started and is running smoothly, you can remove the glow igniter. Drive easy for a few minutes until the engine warms up a little. After warm up you may find it necessary to adjust the carburetor high speed needle, low speed needle, or idle speed set screw to maximize performance.

This might all seem intimidating to you, but it really isn’t hard to learn with a little practice and patience. The sound of that high performance nitro engine springing to life makes it well worth the effort!

Remote Control Drifting is taking off in a big way, in this article I show you step by step how to convert that old 1/10 touring car into a drifters dream machine. It’s very simple and generally only takes a couple of hours, using this practical guide I’ll have you sideways before you know it.

What exactly is drifting?

In a nut shell drifting is the art of changing the angle of attack of your car, while still maintaining full control, so in a typical drift driver X approaches the corner and turns in hard too early, this will bring the rear of the car around, Driver X will then turn back into the slide and keep the car going around the corner while maintaining as much angle and speed as possible, then he will over correct and throw the car into another slide right after the first one, with as little straight lining as possible.

Can a RC car Drift?

Yes, if you’ve ever been involved with RC racing, you know the level of setup that even the basic RC Cards come with, and drifting is no exception. While a stock standard RC car can drift out of the box, there are some basic setup and chassis modification that will help you get more angle, speed and chicks.

Where do I start?

The first thing you need is a RC car, I’ll use two examples, both of which I’ve had personal experience with, the Tamiya TT01 and the Tamiya TA05. The first step to drifting is to break that traction, due to the power to weight ratio of RC Cars we need a little help, Drift Tires are all you need to get sideways, but there is a little more you can do if you want to compete. If you can’t find RC Drift tires you can use insulation tape, be sure to wrap it in the same direction that the wheel will be turning, a good trick is to lay it down and roll you RC Car over it, this is the right way, Taped tires tend to work best on surfaces that already have a little to no traction, i.e. an underground parking lot, but they don’t last long. Drift tires all have different tractions, more traction = bigger drifts, but this is useless if you need to compete on a tight track as the amount of torque used to break traction will also generate a lot of speed, in the end it’s down to personal preference.

What next?

Okay so you taped your tires and played around a bit, not we need to get the car to be more predictable, all the standard racing setting apply, shocks, ride height and wheel angles are up to you, but if there is a must have it’s the rear differential, you need to lock it, this is also know as a spool diff, basically it means that both wheels must turn at the same time. The result is a car that will break and regain traction on command, the drifts will also be much easier to control, more throttle = more angle, less throttle = less angle.

TT01

The Tamiya TT01 uses a planetary gear setup for the rear diff, which is easy to convert (and convert back should you change your mind later) the two most command ways to lock this diff are 1. Open the Diff and fill it with glue from a glue gun, or 2. Take a small piece of fuel tubing ,cut it open along it’s length, and roll this around one of the planetary gears. Once done close the diff and check if it give the desired result before you put it back. The other option is to buy a hop-up spool diff.

TA05

The TA05 uses a ball diff at the back and the front, this is not as easy to modify, but it can be done. The way I modified mine was to use pop rivets. I opened the diff and removed the ball bearings and metal plates that the balls run along. I then drilled three small holes in the side, getting both halves of the diff. I then pop riveted them together and filed down the rivets. This worked, but be careful. 1. It’s not reversible and if you make a mistake the diff will be destroyed. 2. It doesn’t last long, eventually the forces that go through the diff will destroy this because it’s been weakened by holes. A Spool diff is available for the TA05 and this is the preferred options.

What about the front diff?

Now that we have a solid platform we can experiment with slightly different setups to find the one that suites us best, this varies from car to car, but the principle is the same. I personally love using a front one-way diff, or a center one-way diff for more control. The downside is that using brakes at any time is the same as using you e-brake (hand-brake) in a real car, the tail will slide around in a 180, while this can be useful to initiate a drift and transition to a second drift from the first it’s very easy to spin out, so most people prefer not to use the one-ways. Once again this is down to personal preference.

Why drifting is much better than racing.

Well I love both, but from the drifting side it takes a lot more skill and a lot less car, what I mean is that while racing takes skill, you can compensate with an awesome car, there is no way a TT01 will consistently win in a race against a carbon fibre racing machine. But with drifting you can, a TT01 can out perform any car out there, yes it will be difficult, but so much of drifting is down to driver skill that anything can happen. This being the case it’s also possible to get into drifting with very little financial backing (unlike racing)

For long time race car enthusiasts, it is wishful thinking to own a race car. Due to the prohibitive costs, most fans of racing events can just watch jealously from a distance. All they can do is wonder when such an exhilarating experience of racing high-end models of Porsches, Volvos, BMWs or Mercedes will come their way. For most people it is a distant dream, simply because they cannot afford these fully-geared top end models of race cars.

However, there is an alternative to satisfy the cravings of such racing enthusiasts, and that too at a minimal expense. Seems unbelievable doesn’t it? After all, we are talking about those classy race cars that cost several thousand dollars. But, in reality, remote control or RC cars can be used to achieve the same thrills, without the financial drain. Remote control cars conjure up an image of the toy cars that you played with as a kid. However, these are the same beefed up versions of the toy cars but technologically very advanced.

Technological advancement has made impossible things possible. One such technical wonder is a remote or radio controlled car. These are created as exact replicas of the latest models of the classy Volvos or BMW’s that you desired. Race car models are considered the cream of the crop of the automotive industry. You can experience the same thrills by using RC cars for racing at a fraction of the costs.

The popularity of RC cars has increased over the years as there are numerous fans of the hobby. There associations and clubs dedicated to RC car racing. RC cars now participate on speedways and race tracks. Those car race enthusiasts who long to take part in such races can do so now, without being worried of the cost factor. The trendiest RC cars cost just a few hundred dollars.

Gas remote controlled cars look the same as other RC cars and may cost just under US$ 600. They come equipped with the same features as the normal RC cars and may reach amazing speeds crossing 70mph. Dragsters accelerate to a whopping 60mph in less than 3 seconds. A gas RC car may cost you about US$300 or slightly more. You can customize it as per your choice with a custom paint job or adding a fully functional spoiler. This may cost you some additional expenses.

You may also opt for something sensible like one of the off-road remote controlled trucks. A family activity with the RC car can be great fun. There are numerous options available in gas powered RC cars and they are popular with people of all ages and personalities. Gas remote control cars are amazing creations appreciated by all. If you are a fan of these amazing creations, then you can start searching for one right now. There are plenty of websites providing information on gas RC cars.

Ever wondered what is going on inside your RC car or truck each time you try to make it go forward, turn and stop? These types of objects may be small but there are a lot of actions happening at the time you try to make it move. How about what the things that are involved when you want to make your car go faster? What does it take really?

If you want for your RC car to go faster during a race or simply during an afternoon practice, the best and very economical answer to that would be to use shims. What are shims anyway? A shim is a thin metal or a wedge which can also be made of wood. It is placed in between your RC parts to help the RC car maintain its level just in case it goes over rough roads, large stones and the like. An RC car with shims reduces sloppiness while it runs.

The area where you can put a shim is in between the rear hub and axle pin since there is an obvious gap between the two materials. You have to first disassemble the parts starting from the rear hub and then the axle pin. Then, assemble again the rear hub but this time, place the shim next (the shim could be plastic made, wood or metal) followed by the bearing.

Take note that the shim you will be putting should match the same dimension of the ball bearing to ensure that it will work properly. What the shim does is it minimizes the gap in between the axle pin and the bearing. This should do the trick in making your RC car run faster.

There is one downside to shimming though. If there is too much shim, it’s possible for the tires of your car to bind. True that it won’t slop any longer but binding then is going to be your next problem. So make sure that you don’t use too much shim on your bearings.

When companies sell to the public they usually receive their stock from distributors through the country they aside in, leaving the distributors where they get the items from to buy direct from the manufactures or import from abroad. Due to this the price the customer buys can be higher than from companies who buy direct from the manufacturer. This is one of the reasons that cheap rc cars can be sold as such a low cost if the company involved is prepared to put in the work. What this does mean is that stock levels can be trickier due to the time it takes to import the cars.

Nitro Cars are one of the most popular mid range cars so quiet high competition so if you do see these cars sold at a cheap price then this is not due to substandard design, production but due to bypassing the middleman which is a distributor. Nitro cars themselves are very robust, use nitro fuel and can go very fast with very quick acceleration nomatter what price they cost. There are quite a few companies in each country that sell these types of cars so the variety is large and the price varying quiet a bit.

One other popular type of nitro rc car are the Monster Trucks, which come with large wheels, tough chassis and high off the ground meaning they can go over all sorts of terrain. Again, these are built from quality parts but sold at a decent price so don’t let this put you off purchasing a car which looks good but the price is low. Do remember that most of these cars need to be serviced and repaired like normal cars so make sure you are prepared to do this, otherwise go for the electric car variety.

There are several levels of cars ranging from models designed as entry level and for beginners, right up to high specification cars designed for those who have had a couple of years experience and more. One example of an entry level car is the ACME Condor which still has very fast acceleration and speed but lower specs, price and internal structure that allows it to be looked after with limited knowledge. A higher example are the XRC-1 Nitro Truggy which has a very high spec, higher price but still in a very affordable price range.

All in all, no matter what rc car you are looking for, do shop around but don’t think that a cheap price is always a bad price or a car which has substandard parts.

After "The fast and the furious", it has become a common misconception that you can call any speed boosting addition to your car a ‘Nitro’. As a result many people who come across the term "Nitro RC car" are often mislead to believe that its been upgraded.

One can assume such a perception has come from the fact that lots think gas powered radio control cars run on actual gasoline. This couldn’t be further from the truth. What Nitro car actually means is gas powered remote controlled car. This is because this kind of RC car consumes a specialized type Nitromethane and lubricant mixture.

So what should you have to get started on your Nitro RC car?

1. Experience – it is recommended you have sufficient experience in operating an electric RC car before you purchase a Nitro RC car. If you’re a rookie at RC car usage then you probably wont be able to handle a Nitro RC car. This is why beginners are recommended to first get electric cars before they upgrade to Nitro RC cars. Thus, they can have enough skill to be comfortable with the Nitro RC cars.

2. Interest- if you are not interested in Nitro RC cars, then there is absolutely no point in pursuing the hobby. You have to have a drive behind you to truly get the best from the RC car hobby. A hobby like Nitro RC car is expensive business and nobody likes spending on something that does not give them profit. Profit here does not mean monetary gain, but to the profit of pursuing a hobby.

3. Information- it isn’t very beneficial to start off with the Nitro RC cars without having enough information about different things related to it. Nitro RC car racing is often tricky. Having the correct information helps you select and maintain the car of your choice and the chances of you going wrong are less. In fact, with the right information you can even financially profit from this hobby.

4. The correct materials- you may be wondering exactly what are the tools you need equip your Nitro RC car with. Here is a list that can help you decide.

i) – contains just about everything that is required by you for building yourself a basic model of the Nitro RC car. The kit contains what is required to build the RC car itself and includes the chassis, engine, and the whole ensemble. If you’re a beginner it is recommended that you stick to the instructions given in the manual that comes along with the RC kit. With progress in building the car, you might want to graduate from the standard look to your own customized look for your vehicle.

ii) Fuel- the fuel required, in this case Nitromethane-castor oil mix, for powering your Nitro RC car, are available in different hobby stores and shops. Remember- using gasoline to power your Nitro car is not only wrong it is also extremely dangerous. Gasoline is extremely volatile and usually less volatile fuels are used to power the Nitro RC car. In fact gasoline is so volatile that it can even make your engine explode if used. If you’d like to ensure that your car lasts for long and in good condition, it is advisable you use only the fuel that is recommended. With precaution you can enjoy your RC hobby for many days.

Vintage rc cars are hot property, ask any rc cars collector. The older the car the better it is.
Since the modest beginnings of modern day rc hobby till date, a lot has changed in terms of aesthetics and performance. Technology itself has evolved over this period of time and has been so for the betterment of the hobby and as per the wish of its aficionados.

Though the latest gadgets are in they have certainly not replaced the good old vintage rc cars. The nostalgia of wriggling around with a late 70s or early 80s radio controlled car is way too much to handle for some of the devoted enthusiasts who have been into this hobby for probably as long as the hobby has been around.

It’s not the speed, as you find present day’s RC cars capable of beating vintage RC cars hands down that enthral those vintage car fanatics. Neither it’s the sleek technology and great new feature.

Then what is it that pulls hobbyists towards vintage rc cars?
Reliving the time…

Yes! It is the idea of reliving the time spent with those old cars that happen to excite most of the vintage rc cars lovers I have known so far.

Over the years I have found that your next prized vintage rc cars could be around your neighbourhood waiting in somebody’s garage only to be taken out and shared with somebody like you who understands its value. More often than not you will come across your next rc crush via very unsuspecting incidents.

How do I search for vintage rc cars?

This is one question I have been asked numerous times. I thought it would be a good idea to give my readers an idea about places to search for vintage radio controlled cars. So here goes the list of places to search for your treasure.

Craigslist
Go to your city listings on craigslist and search for vintage rc cars listed for sale. Craigslist is a classifieds directory that is very popular among people who want to dispose off their old stuff which for them are no good than space occupying junk. At craigslist usually people list to part with their old belongings and that means you could end up paying a very low price for your next masterpiece.

EBay
EBay is another good place to look for old vintage rc cars. One caution though; while purchasing from eBay only bid on products sold by reputed sellers. You may easily identify a trust worthy seller from his feedback score. Always buy from somebody who has got a feedback score of more than hundred. Also identify the working condition of the vintage rc cars you are about to buy. It involves a little bit of work while working with eBay but then it’s all worth the result.

Local Hobby Shop

This is a good place to look for vintage rc cars. Go to your local hobby shop, befriend the owner and talk about his affair with this hobby and he might just land up showing or better still selling his years old vintage car to you.

Vintage rc cars are a collector’s delight, and if you feel you have it in you what takes to be a good vintage radio controlled cars collector then you certainly have achieved some heights in the field of rc hobby.

If you’re not from an engineering background but pursue driving remote control cars as a hobby, it’s always a good idea to learn as much as possible about remote control cars. We all want some kind of help on how to keep unwanted particles from coming into the car. A quick and simple solution to this problem would to secure your air filter. Alternatively, you could buy du-bro body clip retainers and make sure that they remain clipped at all times and do not get loose.

Sometimes your car may not work properly. Like if you turn on your car and you find that it keeps steering to one side. This may happen even if you keep the wheels straight. A good remedy in this case would be to check if your car has a ’steering trim’ knob, wheel or button option. If there is none then may be adjusting steering servo armature length should do the trick.

A lot of dirt gets accumulated under the chassis and it affects the screw heads. To clean the screw heads under the chassis, spray denatured alcohol on screw heads and then pick the dirt with the help of paper clip. It is recommended to use denatured alcohol as it seems to work better than the simple green or motor cleaner.

Compressed air also works better for cleaning NTC3 after a good day bashing. But an old sock always does the trick to clean your car sparkling and shining. The soft wool or cotton wipes off the dirt like magic. But one has to be sure not leave any lose socks thread going into the car. A small painter brush always cleans unreachable areas and cleans them gently. To wipe of sticky mud under the chassis or on the body of the car using a toothbrush to brush it off also helps. But make sure not to scratch you car paint with a too hard brush bristles.

Keeping spare starter batteries and giving a rain check on your tx, rx, glow starts before going out with your car also helps. This is a must when your batteries or lights etc have been in use for a while.

If you want an alternative way out to shut down the engine in comparison to du-bro exhaust plug you can use a pencil to plug the exhaust to shut down the engine fast. Everyone uses the cable tie trick to fasten the bec plug together so they do not get disconnected accidentally. But this does not seem practical because every time you have to cut the tie and use a new one to recharge the cells. To overcome this problem, a simple solution is to replace the cable ties with the twist tie that holds your rx antenna. They are reusable and do the job perfectly.

Drilling your tires on the outside edge in the middle, instead of the rim, keeps the dust and other crap out of your tires. They’ll stay in balance a lot longer as crud gets thrown out as you drive. If you drill the rims, then every bit o crap will stay in your wheel.

To make your own chassis, blank circuit board or an aluminum plate does a great job. Use vise grips to clamp the original chassis to the blank material and drill all your holes by drilling straight through the existing holes on the original chassis. You’ll get everything to mount up nice that way! If you bother that the circuit board might be too light. No fret! It is more or less like a fiber glass board and work well as top plate on bigger cars too.

To goose the runtime of remote control car the simple trick is to charge them multiple times. If you put your remote control car on charging and take off the plug two- three times then it might give you a good run time because the battery gets charged all over again. But doing it umpteen times might prove lethal to battery life.

If you like cars and trucks or you like to build models you might find that you would also enjoy a hobby that includes the building and use of an RC car. This is something that a lot of people of all ages and walks of life enjoy. Many people think that remote controlled vehicles are just for kids, but it doesn’t matter how old you get, they are still a lot of fun! If you have been looking for something to do in your free time this may be just what you were looking for.

You can buy remote controlled cars that are already built and ready to enjoy if you would like. Many people buy their first car completely built so they can immediately begin playing with it and enjoying the fun and relaxation that can come from simply playing with the car in their backyard or in an open field. If you want to get a bit more involved in the process you can begin to think about building your own remote controlled vehicle.

A lot of people get into the hobby buying their cars and then find that they would rather build their own gas RC car. This is something that will take a lot of time and patience, especially the first time, but it is also a lot of fun. You’ll find that when each phase of the build is complete you have a sense of satisfaction that you don’t get from a lot of other things in life. This is something that you are doing for yourself and for fun, so the rewards are without limits.

You can buy a kit if you would like that walk you through the assembly of your own remote controlled car or truck or you can simply piece it all together. You can also build RC trucks, which also come in kits or you can build your own. It’s better to start out with a kit since it can be quite complicated to build your own vehicle, but either way you’ll find that it is a lot of fun and the challenge is definitely worth it.

A hobby that involves RC cars is really a lot of fun. You will find that you can evolve from someone who simply wants to enjoy playing with the cars to someone who builds them and takes it very seriously. This can be a hobby that allows you to take your mind off of other things while you do something that has some very enjoyable end results. It’s up to you how involved you get and what you do, the idea is just to have fun and have a hobby that gives back as much as you put in.
